Created on the 22nd of March 1852 from parts of the counties of Shasta and Klamath, Siskiyou County was named after the Siskiyou mountain range. It is ranked as the fifth largest county in the state of California and has an approximate population of 47,500.
Siskiyou County is considered an important tourist destination. Its natural beauty, various outdoor recreation activities and a rich Gold Rush era history makes visitors return yearly.
There are numerous activities to do in Siskiyou County year round. During winter, one can go bald eagle watching at the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge, gallery hopping, snow shoeing, ice fishing, cross country skiing, snow mobiling, or ice skating in west coast’s largest outdoor ice rink, the Siskiyou Ice Rink. During spring, one can shoot the rapids at the Upper Sacramento, Salmon, and Scott rivers, watch the bird migration of over 200 bird species at the Klamath and the Tulelake Wildlife Refuges, relax and enjoy the hot mineral waters of Stewart Mineral Springs resort, or mountain climbing at Mount Shasta, United States’ second highest volcano. During summer, one can swim at Lake Siskiyou or at Lake Shastina, go biking, watch a concert, enjoy the County Fair and the Balloon Fair, go hiking or relax by the Upper Sacramento River which is rich in history and folklore. During fall, one can tour the Butte Valley National Grassland, go hunting, drive around Scott Valley, visit the Siskiyou County Museum, or watch a football game. According to National Geographic, the number 40 on the Top 100 US Adventures for 2000 is climbing Mount Shasta and skiing down the Avalanche Gulch Route.
Siskiyou County has various dining options, from gourmet foods, to cafes, delis, to Mediterranean, Mexican, American, Italian, Vietnamese, and Thai cuisine.
The Siskiyou County Office of Education was established in 1857. It has twenty eight public school districts with an enrollment of about 7,500 students from Kindergarten to 12th Grade. It is also home to College of the Siskiyous, founded in 1957, and dubbed as one of California’s most beautiful community college campuses and located at the foot of Mount Shasta.
