Alameda CA Information
The island community known as the City of Alameda is located in the heart of San Francisco Bay. Named “Alameda” by residents in 1853, the city was not formally organized until 1884. The City of Alameda, formerly a land extension of Oakland, came into being in 1902, when a tidal channel was dug to expand shipping facilities. The channel separated Alameda City from Oakland and created the present island community.
Families with school-age children will find no shortage of schools. The City of Alameda has no less than twelve elementary schools as well as three middle schools and three high schools.
Additionally, Alameda’s proximity to Oakland and San Francisco makes commuting to work, shopping or recreation convenient.
The City of Alameda has considerable recreational activities. The Alameda Museum, as well as the museum on the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, make for interesting tours.
Outdoor activities are abundant. The Robert Crown Memorial State Beach is a 2.5 mile sand-duned beach and is enjoyed by swimmers, surfers, picnickers and bicyclists. Fourteen parks add to the variety of outdoor activities available.
The Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire is Northern California’s largest
antiques and collectibles show – and has been popular with Alameda City locals since 1997.
The small town atmosphere of Alameda City is a strong lure for retail businesses, and many recent openings of a number of specialty shops have increased the brand variety of stores available.
All in all, the city’s historic buildings, active street life, friendly businesses and family-oriented events make Alameda a wonderful place to call home.
