Lassen Relocation Information

Established in 1864 and created from parts of the counties of Plumas and Shasta, Lassen County got its name from Peter Lassen of Denmark who left for America to escape poverty.

Lassen County has a land area of 4,547 square miles and has an approximate population of 40,000 and an average household income of $36,310. Its climate is almost ideal, mostly dry with warm, sunny days and cool, chilly nights with an average of ten inches of snowfall every year in the valley areas and more in the higher regions.

Susanville is the county seat.  It is regarded as the gateway city to Reno which is only an 85-mile drive using Highway 395. Its elevation is about 4,250 feet above sea level.   It used to be a mining and logging town.  Today, it is the location of a high-security prison facility, the High Desert State Prison, which was established in 1995.  It is also home to California’s second largest natural lake, Eagle Lake, which offers various outdoor activities like camping, fishing, bicycling, hiking, bird watching, and boating.  Other popular spots are Bizz Johnson Trail, Elk’s Lodge, Lassen National Forest, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Susanville Railroad Depot, Coppervale Ski Hill, Honey Lake Wildlife Area and a lot more.

Cities and towns in this county include Bieber, Doyle, Herlong, Janesville, Litchfield, Madeline, Milford, Nubieber, Ravendale, Standish, Susanville, Termo, Wendel, and Westwood.  Its adjacent counties are Sierra County in the southeast, Plumas County in the south, Shasta County in the west, Modoc County in the north, and Washoe County in the east.

The county has museums which features artifacts and pictures dating back from the 1800’s.  It has lakes, mountains, desert, valleys, and forests making it a haven for nature and outdoor lovers.

Lassen County has excellent educational opportunities as well, providing services to children from elementary to community college level.
