Mariposa Real Estate Relocation and Foreclosures Information
One of the original counties. Mariposa County was the largest of the state's original counties, but territory that was once part of Mariposa is now part of 12 other counties -- Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, Madera, Merced, Mono, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, and Tulare. It has a resident of more than 17,130.
A Spanish word meaning butterfly, Mariposa County was created in 1850 and was among the original counties of the state of California. The county got its name from Mariposa Creek, when explorers from Spain found in the foothills of the Sierras, butterflies in great clusters. It used to be the largest county but as years passed parts of it was ceded to other counties, Fresno, Kern, Inyo, Kings, Madera, Mono, Los Angeles, Merced, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, San Bernardino, and Tulare, and because of this, Mariposa County has been dubbed ever since as the “Mother of all Counties.” Its adjacent counties are Tuolumne County in the north, Merced County in the west, and Madera County in the south and east.
Rushing streams, rolling terrain, and deep canyons are the geographical features of this county. Mild, wet winters with yearly rainfall and dry and warm summers are experienced at the lower elevations while the upper elevations have plentiful snowfall and summers are dry and mild.
The eastern half of Mariposa County is the central part of Yosemite National Park. Four out of the five main highways leading to the park pass through the county making tourism its primary industry and biggest employer. More than three million visitors come to the park annually. It is known world wide for its magnificence with its waterfalls, granite cliffs, and streams. Three groves of the world’s tallest and oldest trees, the Sequioa, are found in the park, the Mariposa Grove, Tuolumne Grove, and the Merced Grove. Hundreds of waterfalls are also found in the park like the famous Bridalveil Falls, Yosemite Falls, and the Vernal Falls. Nature lovers can enjoy horse back riding, camping, biking, hiking, mountain climbing, skiing, and fishing.
Other attractions are its museums, antique shops, and historical buildings. Various restaurants like full service, fast food, cafes and restaurants with ethnic cuisine can be found throughout the county.
Mariposa County has seven elementary schools, a middle school, two high schools all under the Mariposa County Unified School District. The county also provides alternative programs and special education programs.
A relaxed, rural lifestyle is what Mariposa County has to offer.
