Mono County was established in 1861 and was created from parts of the counties of Calaveras, Fresno, and Mariposa. In 1866, parts of the territory of the county were given to the county of Inyo. It is named after Mono Lake which was inhabited by the Paiute, a Native American tribe which were called by their western neighbors “monachie” which means fly people as their main food and their trading article is the pupae of a fly.
Located in California State’s east central portion, east of Sierra Nevada between Nevada and Yosemite National Park, Mono County’s cities and towns include Bridgeport, the county seat, where a historic courthouse was built in the year 1880, and is now home to most of the county offices, Lee Vining, which is a gateway to Yosemite National Park, and Mammoth Lakes, the county’s only incorporated city, situated at the foot of the Mammoth Mountain.
With a land area of about 3,130 square miles, and an approximate population of 13,000, Mono County is known for its streams, lakes, trails, geological formations, and its magnificent scenic beauty. A four season paradise, this county offers outdoor activities such as birdwatching, boating, camping, fishing, golfing, hiking, horseback riding, hot air balloon rides, hunting, rock climbing, cross country skiing, ice climbing, sled dog rides, snow boarding, and snow mobiling. Popular places to visit are Mono Lake, which supports various migratory birdlife, June Lake, which is often called “The Switzerland of the Sierra” which is a haven for outdoor lovers with its waterfalls, lakes, streams, and peaks. One can also visit the museums and go antique shopping. Also situated here is Bodie, the most wicked, wildest, and toughest of the of all the 1800’s gold camps. It is now a California State Historic Park and Landmark and a National Historic Site.
There are a number of restaurants to choose from. Almost every type of food is offered in Mono County. Fast foods, cafes, fancy restaurants can be found throughout the county.
There are two school districts. The Eastern Sierra Unified School District and the Mammoth Unified School District has outstanding schools that the county boasts of.
