Tuolomne County is comprised of 14 cities and town and is 133 miles east of San Francisco. Sacramento International, Oakland International, San Jose International and San Francisco International Airports, considered major airports are within easy driving distance from Sonora, the county seat. There are three main highways leading to this beautiful county are from the west, Highway 108 and Highway 120, and from the north, Highway 49. Counties near Tuolomne are Alpine in the north, Calaveras in the northwest, Stanislaus in the southwest, Mariposa in the south, Madera in the southeast, and Mono in the east.
It is considered quite a small county with a total area of 2,274 square miles and an approximate population of 55,000 but small as it may be, it is a dynamic and flourishing part of the State of California.
Residents enjoy an average of 325 days of sunshine which makes it a perfect place for outdoor lovers. Hiking, rafting, gold panning, biking, fishing, camping, skiing, snowmobiling are some of the activities this historic Gold Rush county has to offer.
Yosemite National Park’s northern half is situated in Tuolomne County’s eastern part. It is one of United State’s first wilderness parks where waterfalls, valleys, meadows, and old giant sequoias are found. On the northwest boundary of this park is the Stanislaus National Forest where one can enjoy rafting in the Tuolomne River. Three miles north of Sonora City is the Columbia State Historic Park which was known before as the “Gem of the Southern Mines”. The Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown still has an unimpaired steam locomotive repair and maintenance facility which is still working.
There are also museums, wineries, historic hotels, live theaters, golf courses, restaurants, and two state historic sites.
Tuolomne County’s meadows and streams in high elevation areas are home to several species of freshwater aquatic plants.
