The State of Massachusetts, which is located in the North Eastern United States, received its name from the Massachuset Indian tribe that was living along the Massachusetts Bay which means "at or about the Great Hill." State was admitted into the Union as the 6th U.S. State on February 6th of 1788.
The capital of the State of Massachusetts is the City of Boston. The State's nickname is The Bay State and their flag features the state's coat of arms on a white field. The official seal of the State of Massachusetts features the state's coat of arms, with the inscription Sigillum Reipublicae Massachusettensis which means "Seal of the Republic of Massachusetts" . The State of Massachusetts's coat of arms features a blue shield with an Indian that is depicted in gold who is holding a bow in his right hand and an arrow pointing downward in his left. Above the Indian's bow is a five-pointed silver star. There is also a crest that shows a bent right arm clasping a broadsword and around the shield but beneath the crest is the banner with the state's motto in green.
The State of Massachusetts has their own state song named "All Hail to Massachusetts." The Massachusetts State Motto is Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem which means "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty." Their State bird is the chickadee and the cod is the State's fish. While the Massachusetts State's flower may be the mayflower or the ground laurel, the State tree is the American elm.
The State of Massachusetts has a State gem, which is the rhodonite. The State heroine was chosen to be Deborah Sampson. The State of Massachusetts celebrates all of the same federal holidays, but they do not have their own state holidays. The holidays celebrated in New York are New Year's Day, the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas.
There are many notable places in the State of Massachusetts that includes the Old Sturbridge Village which is located in Sturbridge, the Minute Man National Historical Park which can be found between Lexington and Concord and Plimoth Plantation which is in the City of Plymouth. In the City of Boston there are a number of places of historical interest that includes the Old State House Faneuil Hall,, Old North Church, the USS Constitution as well as the John F. Kennedy Museum and Library .
