The city of Pittsburg, California is located at the spot where the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers merge. History of this Delta town began in 1839. At that time, the government of Mexico gave almost 10,000 acres of land to Jose Antone Mesa and Miguel Jose Garcia. It was first named New York, then later called New York Landing due to the influence of Colonel J.D. Stevenson. The Colonel, who was a native of New York, was the man who laid out the original town.
In 1903, coal was discovered in the hills right outside of town. Consequently, the name was changed to Black Hills at that time. In 1911, the citizens voted in the name of Pittsburg due to the opening of the Columbia Geneva Steel Company. Today, in spite of the town being known as “California’s Backcountry” because of its excellent reputation as an international destination for flyfishing, Pittsburg it remains.
The land area of Pittsburg is 15.6 square miles and the median resident age is 30.9. Median income is $55,949. The median price for a home in this area at $476,370 is way below the average for California.
The town is considered to be a fishing and boating paradise with delightful rural charm. Many residents refer to themselves as “river people” due to the laid-back style of life which centers on boating, fishing and camping.
Delta social life focuses on marinas and resorts which are similar to neighborhoods and villages elsewhere. These marinas range from small and rustic to large and elegant with numerous amenities, including but not limited to restaurants, cafes, night clubs, marine sales and repair and campgrounds. RVs are very popular in Pittsburg and there are many parks and campgrounds that offer full hook-ups.
This town is a paradise for fisherman. It hosts a seafood festival each September and offers tournaments for black bass enthusiasts. There is a huge variety of fish to be caught in the Delta area:
keep ones of minimum 46 inches.
-
Catfish are also very popular and some say the most delicious.
-
Blass bass are not difficult to catch. Delta tournaments sometimes offer up to $75,000 in prizes.
-
American Shads are quite prolific and put up a good fight.
-
The Delta is an international flyfishing destination for large Striped Bass and Largemouth Bass.
-
Delta Crawdads are delicious and easy to catch. However, you need a license to catch them.
Although this wonderful little city is close to Sacramento and Stockton and only a two-hour drive from San Francisco and Fresno, the charm of this sleepy town is not well-known. While new residents and visitors are made welcome here, there is an air of quiet and privacy that remains from the era of the Gold Rush.
I’m ready to go to work for you! Thank you for your Pittsburg real estate business.
