The State of California, which is located in the Western United States, received its name from the mythical island of California in a 16th century romance novel. State was admitted into the Union as the 31st U.S. State on September 9th of 1850.
The capital of the State of California is the City of Sacramento. The State's nickname is the Golden State and their flag features a white field with a single red star in the upper left corner along with a red stripe and the words "California Republic" along the bottom. In the center of the flag is a brown grizzly bear that is standing on a patch of grass. The official seal of the State of California features the goddess Minerva in the foreground with a grizzly bear in front of her shield. There can also be seen the San Francisco Bay, Sierra Nevada, a sheaf of wheat, a miner and a cluster of grapes, all of which represents California's resources. The California State motto along with 31 stars are visible at the top along with the words "The Great Seal of the State of California" encircling the whole.
The State of California has their own state song named "I Love You, California." The California State Motto is Eureka meaning "I have found it." Their State bird is the California valley quail and the South Fork golden trout is the State's fish. While the California State's flower may be the golden poppy, the California State tree is the California redwood.
The State of California has a State gem, which is gold. The State rock was chosen to be the serpentine.
The State of California celebrates all of the same federal holidays, but they do not have their own state holidays. The holidays celebrated in New York are New Year's Day, the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas.
