Illinois State Facts and Information
The State of Illinois, which is located in the Northern part of the Mid-West United States, received its name from the French word Iliniwek which means "tribe of superior men," which was an Indian group formerly located in the region. Illinois State was admitted into the Union as the 21st U.S. State on December 3rd of 1818.
The capital of the State of Illinois is the City of Springfield. The State's nickname is The Prairie State and their flag features the interior portion of the state's seal and the word "Illinois" all of which is on a white field. The official seal of the State of Illinois features an American eagle that is perched on a boulder and is holding a banner bearing the state motto in its beak. The area below the eagle features a shield which is resting on an olive branch. There is also a depicted prairie with the rising sun eastern horizon. On the boulder you can read the dates 1818 and 1868 which are the years of the state seal's introduction as well as revision. The words "Seal of the State of Illinois Aug. 26th 1818" encircles the whole.
The State of Illinois has their own state song named "Illinois." The Illinois State slogan is the Land of Lincoln. Their State bird is the cardinal and the bluegill is the State's fish. While the Illinois State's flower may be the native violet, the Illinois State tree is the white oak.
The State of Illinois celebrates all of the same federal holidays, but they do not have their own state holidays. The holidays celebrated in New York are New Year's Day, the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas
There are many notable locations in the State of Illinois, especially in the central region of Illinois which is known for its shrines and memorials which are associated with the life of President Abraham Lincoln. In the City of Springfield one can find the Lincoln Tomb, the Lincoln Home along with the restored Old State Capitol building. The state also has other notable points of interest that includes the home of Mormon leader Joseph Smith which is located in Nauvoo and. The City of Chicago, Illinois has many notable locations including the Museum of Science and Industry, Adler Planetarium, Merchandise Mart, Art Institute, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Chicago Portage National Historic Site.
