The State of Indiana, which is located in the Northern part of the Mid-West United States, received its name for the many Indian tribes that were located in the region. Indiana State was admitted into the Union as the 19th U.S. State on December 11th of 1816.
The capital of the State of Indiana is the City of Indianapolis. The State's nickname is The Hoosier State and their flag features a torch that represents liberty and is surrounded by 19 golden stars against on a blue field. The word "Indiana" is located above the torch's flame. The official seal of the State of Indiana features a pioneer setting in which a farmer is chopping down a tree while a buffalo flees from a forest to the prairie. Located in the background is the setting sun over distant hills and the words "Seal of the State of Indiana 1816" encircles the whole.
The State of Indiana has their own state song named "On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away." The State Motto is The Crossroads of America. Their State bird is the cardinal and the state's poem is entitled "Indiana." While the Indiana State's flower may be the peony, the Indiana State tree is the tulip poplar. The State of Indiana celebrates all of the same federal holidays, but they do not have their own state holidays. The holidays celebrated in New York are New Year's Day, the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas
There are many notable places in the State of Indiana that includes the Wyandotte Cave which is one of the largest caves in the US and is located in County of Crawford in southern Indiana, the West Baden Lick, the French Lick; which are both well known mineral springs. Other notable Indiana attractions include the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, and the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park. Indiana is home to the Indianapolis 500 every year which is a famous Formula 1 series race.
