Maryland State Information and Facts
The State of Maryland, which is located in the North Eastern United States, received its name from Henrietta Maria who was a queen consort of the King, Charles I of England. Maryland State was admitted into the Union as the 7th U.S. State on April 28th of 1788.
The capital of the State of Maryland is the City of Annapolis. The State has two nicknames which are the Old Line State as well as the Free State and their flag features the quartered arms of the Crossland and Calvert families who were the maternal and paternal families of the founders of the state. The official seal of the State of Maryland has two sides. The reverse side of the seal features a shield which is bearing the arms of the Crosslands and Calverts and is surmounted with an earl's coronet along with a helmet and the shield is supported by both a farmer as well as a fisherman. The state's original Claverts motto appears on a scroll which is below the shield. The shield and scroll is encircled by the words Scuto bon voluntatis tu coronasti nos which means "With the shield of thy favor hast thou compassed us," as well as the date "1632," which was the state's first charter. On the obverse side of the coat of arms you can see Lord Baltimore who is depicted as a knight in armor on a charger horse. There is also an inscription in Latin that means "Cecilius, Absolute Lord of Maryland and Avalon New Foundland, Baron of Baltimore."
The State of Maryland has their own state song named "Maryland, My Maryland." The State Motto is Fatti maschii, parole femine which means "Manly deeds, womanly words." Their State bird is the baltimore oriole and the blue crab is the State's crustacean. While the Maryland State's flower may be the black-eyed Susan, the Maryland State tree is the white oak.
The State of Maryland celebrates all of the same federal holidays, but they do also have their own state holiday of Defenders' Day which falls on September 12th. The holidays celebrated in New York are New Year's Day, the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas
There are many notable locations in Maryland that includes the Fort McHenry National Monument; Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, the Chesapeake National Historic Park and the Ohio Canal National Historic Park. You can also find the National Aquarium, the Antietam National Battlefield, USS Constellation and the Maryland Science Center located at Baltimore's Inner Harbor. There is also the Assateague Island National Park Seashore, Catoctin Mountain Park, the Jefferson Patterson Historical Park and Museum which is located at St. Leonard, the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Historic St. Mary's City, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, the Ocean City beach resort, Fort Frederick Park and the Piscataway Park.
