The State of Michigan, which is located in the Northern part of the Mid-West United States, received its name from the Fox Indian word mesikami which means a "large lake." Michigan State was admitted into the Union as the 26th U.S. State on January 26th of 1837.

The capital of the State of Michigan is the City of Lansing. The State's nickname is The Wolverine State and their flag features the State's coat of arms on a blue field with fringes on 3 sides. The official seal of the State of Michigan features the State's coat of arms which is surrounded by the words "The Great Seal of the State of Michigan" along with the 1835 date in the Roman numeral form of "AD MDCCCXXXV." The state's coat of arms features a shield which depicts a peninsula on which a man stands during sunrise while holding a rifle. At the top of this shield is the word "Tuebor" which means I will defend and underneath the shield is the state motto. There is a moose on the right and an elk on the left that support the shield. At the top is an American eagle with the words E pluribus unum below the eagle.

 

The State of Michigan has their own unofficial state song named "Michigan, My Michigan." The State Motto is Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice which means "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you." Their State bird is the robin and the trout is the State's fish.  While the State's flower may be the apple blossom, the Michigan State tree is the white pine.

The State of Michigan has a State gem, which is the chlorastrolite. The State stone was chosen to be the petoskey stone.

The State of Michigan celebrates all of the same federal holidays, but they do not have their own state holidays. The holidays celebrated in New York are New Year's Day, the  Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas.
The State of Michigan produces an important amount of bromine, copper, iron, gypsum, iodine, salt, gravel, lime and cement. The State of Michigan's farms grow beans, cherries, pears, apples, potatoes, grapes, and sugar beets and just north of the capital in the City of St, Johns you can find mint. The states forests contribute to economy which helps support thousands of jobs that are in the wood-product, recreation industries and tourism. The State of Michigan has 10,083 inland lakes and over 3,288 miles of the Great Lakes shoreline. Michigan is both a prime area for commercial as well as sport fishing.

There are many notable points in Michigan that includes the automobile plants in Flint, Dearborn, Lansing, Detroit and Pontiac. You can also find Mackinac Island which is located between the northern and mainland peninsulas of the State of Michigan. In the State of Michigan you can also find the Sleeping Bear Dunes along with the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshores, Greenfield Village which is located in Dearborn and there are a number of summer resorts located along both the inland lakes as well as the Great Lakes.
